DES MOINES, IA – A worker at the UPS facility at the Des Moines International Airport was killed by a semi truck on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010 shortly before 6:00 a.m. just south of the main terminal at the airport.
Des Moines International Airport is located about 6 1/2 miles southwest of downtown Des Moines.
The accident occurred when the UPS employee was opening a gate next to a guard shack to allow a semi truck to pass through to make a delivery. The victim was caught between the guard shack and the truck when it was making a wide turn to pass through the gate.
The UPS worker became pinned against the guard shack by the trailer, and then he fell over and was run over by the rear wheels of the big rig. He died as a result of his injuries.
The victim was identified as 64 year-old Daniel Raber. Paramedics were called to the scene shortly before 6:00 a.m. Raber was transported to the Methodist Medical Center, but he was pronounced dead when he arrived.
The driver of the semi truck was identified as Si Mohammed Aboudou, 29 years old from Orlando, Florida, who is a student driver. His instructor was a passenger in the 18-wheeler at the time of the accident.

As he comes around, comes through the guard shack, there, that gate, there, he’s swinging wide to make the turn. It looks like our victim was caught between the guard shack and the truck. After the truck makes the turn they realize that the other UPS employee had been hit.
Des Moines Police are investigating the accident.
