WINTER PARK, FL – A UPS semi truck crashed into another vehicle and caught fire on the southbound Interstate 4 just north of the Fairbanks exit near Winter Park, FL on Friday, August 27, 2010.
Winter Park is in Orange County, Florida about 6 miles northeast of Orlando, 23 miles northeast of Kissimmee, 61 miles northeast of Lakeland and about 91 miles northeast of Tampa.
The big rig accident happened at about 2:00 a.m. in the morning when the driver of a UPS 18 wheeler lost control of his rig, jackknifed, then veered into the concrete barrier and crashed into an SUV. The accident occurred between the Princeton Street and Lee Road exits.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Craig T. Roy, from the Jacksonville area, was the driver of the UPS truck. Roy told the FHP that mechanical issues with the 18 wheeler caused him to lose control.
The other vehicle that was involved in the accident was a Ford Edge. The UPS semi truck crashed into driver’s side of the vehicle, crushing it against the concrete barrier before the semi truck became engulfed in flames.
A security camera in the area caught footage of the truck going up in flames.
Michael Shaver, the driver of the Ford Edge, and a passenger in the UPS truck were injured in the accident. Shaver escaped out the back window of his vehicle.
Fuel was spilled in the impact, which caught fire and eventually consumed the UPS truck cab.
Packages were spilled all over the roadway in the incident. Many packages were damaged in the crash and resulting fire, but many other packages were undamaged and recovered.
There were two trailers involved in the accident. Packages from one of the trailers were completely lost. The packages were taken to the UPS hub in Orlando for reprocessing.

Traffic was backed up for hours while Fire Department personnel and other crews cleaned up 75 gallons of diesel fuel and wrecked vehicles.
The driver of the SUV and the semi truck passenger were taken to a local hospital and treated for their injuries and were later released.
